The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is located in Washington, DC, next to the
Tidal Basin in East Potomac Park. The structure is colonnaded and
circular with a rotunda, a style Jefferson introduced, and was dedicated
on April 13, 1943. It pays tribute to Thomas Jefferson, the author
of the Declaration of Independence and President of the USA from 1801 to
1809. The statue of Jefferson in the interior of the memorial is
cast from bronze, and Japanese cherry trees surround the building.
The Jefferson Memorial is administered by the National Park Service. The idea for it was proposed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The was designed by John Russell Pope, and is made from Vermont marble as well as Georgia limestone and marble.
