Nicknamed "The Big Apple" and "The City that Never Sleeps," New York City
is considered one of the major metropolitan centers of the world.
The Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, yellow taxi cabs —
this city is full of familiar icons. Eight million residents are
sprawled through five diverse boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, the
Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. The population is as colorful as
the boroughs themselves, reflecting the many ethnicities and backgrounds
which have built this East Coast city. New York plays host to
multiple professional sports teams, among them: MLB's New York
Yankees and Mets; the NFL's New York Giants and Jets; the NHL's Rangers
and Islanders; and the NBA's New York Knicks. The city is also home
to numerous colleges, including the City University of New York (CUNY),
the State University of New York (SUNY), and New York University (NYU).
