Philadelphia was founded by William Penn in 1682 on the banks of the
Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. The Quaker colony eventually became
the center of political activity during the Revolutionary War.
Today, Independence National Historic Park encompasses such American
treasures as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where both the
Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were adopted. The
city is now home to 1.5 million residents, along with four professional
sports teams: the NFL Philadelphia Eagles; the MLB Phillies, winners
of the 2008 World Series; the NHL Flyers; and the NBA Sixers. The
City of Brotherly Love also boasts a thriving entertainment district
surrounding South Street, famous for its eclectic shops, cafes and, of
course, its cheesesteaks.
